A talking circle: men's yarning
Part of ‘The National 2019: New Australian Art’ opening weekend
MCA, Level 2 Seminar Room

Sharing, talking, yarning. This talking circle brings together artists to engage in cross-cultural dialogue, encompassing topics such as challenging dominant paradigms; art that addresses power and hierarchy in Australia; the importance of language; and the role of ritual and improvisation in our everyday lives.

This event is based on ‘yarning’ circles – a culturally safe space created by Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander women and men to have their voices heard and discuss issues that directly affect them. This ‘third space’* invites all audiences to join these open and honest conversations.

The National 2019 artists Abdul-Rahman Abdullah and Teo Treloar will be speaking, facilitated by Keith Munro, MCA Curator of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Programs.

*The third space references both physical or conceptual spaces where complex dialogue can be held safely and with implicit acknowledgement of power dynamics.
